Partners in Conservation
In 1991, staff and volunteers at the Columbus Zoo learned about the outbreak of civil war in Rwanda through magazines, newspapers and television accounts. They immediately thought about the safety of the gorillas, but were also numbed as they read about the suffering of the people of Rwanda. Partners In Conservation or [PIC] was initiated in direct response to what was happening in Rwanda. Columbus Zoo Docents, Barb DeLorme, Judy Hoffman Bolton and Jeff Ramsey, met Gorilla Keeper, Charlene Jendry, one evening after work to determine if there was something they could do to help. At that time they developed their program name, Partner in Conservation and established their mission: (1) to initiate educational programs that increase public awareness about the people, cultures and mountain gorillas of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic of Congo; and (2) to raise money to benefit both local people and wildlife. PIC doesn’t have membership dues or formal volunteer meetings; by taking this approach, everyone can contribute their expertise as needed. PIC continues to grow, because of the combined efforts of many zoos and the commitment of many people.
